Managing Safe, Efficient Pharmacy Services Requires Technology
Mimi Nguyen, PharmD, is quoted about their use of RFID. The article states:
A new program standardizes the emergency kits through MEPS, a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag system, which was piloted at Sharp Memorial Hospital and is now being expanded throughout the system.
RFID improves inventory and safety because it keeps track of every product in the kit, when it expires, when something is used and when it needs to be replaced, Dr. Nguyen noted.
“For example, if there is a recall, we have to know where those drugs are. Without RFID, you can’t know where that kit is and what sits in that kit without going through 100 crash carts, opening every kit and looking at the lot numbers to pull it out.”
Furthermore, she explains that,
For us to manage (a $100 million drug) budget and manage that inventory, we have to have technology. -Mimi Nguyen, PharmD
