Humber River Hospital in Toronto
A report entitled New fully digital Humber River Hospital aims to be a model, published on Oct 16 2015, by Tara Deschamps, Staff Reporter for the Toronto Star, describes some of the technology at this state-of-the-art facility, being heralded as North America’s first fully digital hospital:
“You’ll find robots that mix drugs and transport goods, bedside touchscreens that allow patients to video-chat with doctors, and machines that process blood samples in minutes, automatically entering results into electronic records… The measures make age-old tasks more efficient.”
Check out the video tour produced by CTV News Toronto: Zuraidah Alman takes a tour of a state-of-the-art health facility that's the first hospital of its kind in North America.
One of the technology advances aimed at making Humber River Hospital safer and more efficient is the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System being used in the hospital’s pharmacy. As in hundreds of hospitals across the U.S. and Canada, Humber River Hospital will use Intelliguard® RFID Solutions for pharmacy inventory management to assure the right drugs, in the right doses, are available for patients when and where they’re needed.
RFID-enabled kit and tray management provides for faster replenishment and reduced errors when procedural and emergency medication kits and trays are cycled through the pharmacy for replenishment. With the ability to scan more 150 items in seconds, the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management Systems instantly provides details as to what’s missing, expired and soon-to-expire so that stock can be replaced quickly and error-free.

North York General Hospital
A case study from North York General Hospital in Toronto, ON is featured in the Intelligent Hospital Pavilion handbook. The handbook includes the poster session summary of the recently published case study, "Implementation of Radio Frequency Identification for Medication Tray Management" by Edith Rolko, BScPhm, RPh, Director of Pharmacy Services and Thomas Chan, BScPhm, MBA, RPh, Manager of Pharmacy Systems, North York General Hospital.
Edith Rolko presented the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System Time and Motion study outcomes at the CSHP Banff Conference in March 2015. The study found that the Intelliguard® System reduces tray-restocking times and will save 659 labor hours annually. It also showed that using the Intelliguard® System to track each medication restocked in the trays was 100 percent accurate over the course of 16 individual tray restocking events.
The full case study including Study Design, Results, Discussion, Significance for Practice and References is published in The Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy / Le Journal canadien de la pharmacie hospitaliere (CJHP / JCPH – 412 Vol. 68, No. 5 – September–October 2015).

I read no trip to Ontario truly is complete without a ride on the legendary Maid of the Mist, taking you to the base of the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls since 1876. I promise your trip to HealthAchieve won’t be complete without a demonstration of the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System or a meeting with our President and CEO, Mr. Shariq Hussain, who will be in attendance as well.
Feel free to email me directly and I’ll be happy to facilitate a private meeting: vfritz@mepsrealtime.com
