ASHP's Focus on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for Medication Management

ASHP recently recognized RFID for medication management as an established technology that’s gaining momentum for use within healthcare. According to the report published by the ASHP Foundation, titled Advancing Medication Safety Through Technology Innovation: Focus on RFID Technology, hospitals should consider several key elements when evaluating RFID technology.

To help you in your solution evaluation process, we compiled the details behind these key elements from ASHP and included a few other items to consider when evaluating an RFID vendor. Below is the ASHP list of “Must-Haves” and how IntelliGuard stacks up against the ASHP recommendations. This information will make comparing RFID solutions quick and painless.

ASHP list of “Must-Haves” and how IntelliGuard stacks up against the recommendations

ASHP Recommendation

IntelliGuard®

Take advantage of the growing options for obtaining RFID enabled medications to help reduce manual in-house efforts

IntelliGuard solutions are compatible with all GS1 compliant products, including the entire +RFID product line from Fresenius Kabi. Their current portfolio features RFID enabled medications, with a plan to continue expansion over the next two years.

GS1 global standards are open, technology-independent, and permit full interoperability and compatibility, which is critical as the industry sees an expansion of line items pre-tagged for use in all major RFID systems by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Vendor support during implementation planning and go-live

Onsite training is included with implementation and provided by certified pharmacy technicians who are familiar with medication workflows and hospital pharmacy processes.

IntelliGuard’s team delivers complete, onsite, and hassle-free implementation with full conversion to all desired RFID-enabled workflows. Implementation is guided by an assessment plan developed in coordination with the vendor. Progress is reported using the defined success criteria and KPIs.

Vendor Support post-implementation

Following a successful implementation, staff members are fully trained on usage, and are supported long-term. They have access to a 24/7 remote client services support team for the life of their contract.

Ensure RFID tag meets adhesive quality, reliability, and performance recommendations

Designed with the most reliable adhesive quality and easily fits on even the smallest ampules and vials. Our RFID Smart Flag Tag is the smallest on the market, won’t crowd anesthesia trays and/or interfere with reading FDA-approved drug labels and will remain securely affixed to the product for its entire useful life.

Space-conscious design taking into consideration additional space may be needed, or desired, for maintaining separate inventory of RFID tagged medications.

IntelliGuard offers two different space-neutral design options to fit the often-limited space in the pharmacy. Staff-friendly ergonomic engineering includes integrated work surfaces, all-in-one computers and an elegant touchscreen interface eliminating the need for a keyboard or mouse.

Partner with a vendor whose product workflows and implementation processes lessen staffing and inventory management impacts

Products deliver workflows and processes which enable pharmacists to efficiently oversee RFID Smart Tag usage and simultaneously scan and approve all RFID medications in a single step.

Virtual Logbook enables chain of custody and provides item specific location tracking for all kits and trays. The solution supports single or multi-step deployment process (e.g., pharmacy to clinical area; pharmacy to biomedical engineering to clinical area.)

Customization of the product

IntelliGuard’s Enterprise solution delivers flexibility to configure user rights and access, as well as a variety of approved pharmacist and technician processes (including Tech-Check-Tech) and audit specifications by tray type. The team will work with you prior to product implementation to ensure workflows and functionality meet your unique needs.

Contract should be well-written, easily understood, and serve as the cornerstone of a good client/vendor relationship

The IntelliGuard contract is well-defined and comprehensive. It includes industry-standard legal language, while also providing customer-friendly service levels and commitments. It is designed to be simple and aide in expediting the legal review and signature approval process.

Adopt an analytics platform that provide real time data management and is user-friendly for all parties

IntelliGuard Insights is an analytics engine that transforms inventory data into strategic business intelligence for improved planning and optimization. The solution quickly identifies trends, helps to right-size inventory, and delivers data to improve operational efficiencies across a single hospital or multi-site IDN. End users can simply share critical insights with team members using dynamic, personalized reports and dashboards.

Vendor selected provides significant opportunity to expand the RFID program beyond the pharmacy

IntelliGuard Pharmacy is just one part of an RFID-enabled ecosystem of medication management solutions to support a variety of critical inventory visibility challenges. The IntelliGuard Enterprise of products enables expansion to controlled access for operating room medication management, remote inventory storage and access, temperature sensitive storage with item level monitoring, and drug consignment programs.
